The deadline to file federal taxes has been moved to July 15 to allow more time for taxpayers during the coronavirus pandemic, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced Friday.
Originally, the deadline for filing taxes was April 15. The delay allows taxpayers and businesses additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties.
The new deadline is only for federal taxes. Massachusetts’ deadline remains April 15.
Mnuchin still recommended taxpayers file as soon as possible though.
“I encourage all taxpayers who may have tax refunds to file now to get your money,” Mnuchin said in a follow-up tweet.
The announcement comes in the same week a $1 trillion plan stimulus plan was announced. The plan includes sending a pair of $1,000 checks, issued in April and May, to many Americans.
