A U.S. Army veteran who died last March received a proper burial Friday morning at the Dayton National Cemetery.

James Cummins served in the Army from 1972-74 and he died at the age of 63.

The Dayton VA said Cummins had no known family and his remains had not been brought to the Dayton National Cemetery until a social worker with the VA helped.

The social worker, Carmela Daniels, helped bring Cummins’ ashes back to Dayton and she planned the service.

The National Cemetery has a program that focuses on ensuring that no veteran is ever buried alone, even when the veteran has no family or friends who can attend.
