The Bayonne Elks Lodge 434 held a special funeral service last week for an Army veteran who died in August with no relatives to organize a formal burial.

The funeral service for Pfc. Melvin Scharf was held Friday at Holy Name Cemetery & Mausoleum in Jersey City with the help of Kelly Mazzochi of the Stirling Elks Lodge, the Bayonne Office of Aging, the Hudson County Office of Health and Human Services, and Michalski Funeral Home.

Mourners from several New Jersey Elk lodges, including the American Legion Post 19 Color Guard and other veterans organizations were in attendance.

“Having died without relatives doesn’t mean you have no family,” the Bayonne Elks posted on their Facebook page. “This gentleman now has an Elk family.”
