At the end of President Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night, Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi stood and immediately tore up the printed copy of Trump’s speech.

Trump’s address touted improvements in the American economy, manufacturing industries, and foreign trade deals, recognized several Americans for their heroics and hardships, denounced socialism and terrorism, and called on Congress to pass bills that would benefit Americans.

Pelosi’s actions garnered her a wave of criticism, some denoted by the Twitter hashtags #PelosiTantrum, #PettyPelosi, and #PelosiMeltdown, all of which were trending on the social media site Wednesday morning. Trump did not directly make a statement in regard to Pelosi’s actions, but he did retweet many tweets by other individuals who waged their own criticism of Pelosi.

Many members of Congress weighed in with their own tweets.

Rep. Jim Jordan pointed out that Trump’s speech “praised the #bluecollarboom, gave scholarship to young student, lauded a 100 y/o Tuskegee airman, celebrated little girl born at 21 weeks, honored @limbaugh, reunited a military family, stood for sanctity of life,” adding that “Pelosi can’t rip up the things that make America great.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham tweeted, “You can tear up the speech, but you can’t tear up the accomplishments.”

Rep. Steve Scalise tweeted, “Democrats are in a full meltdown. – Trump is about to be acquitted – Their party is in a civil war – America is winning again despite their obstruction The only thing Dems are unified on is tearing America apart just to try to tear @realDonaldTrump down. They should be ashamed.”

Rep. Paul Gosar tweeted, “What a sad display of extreme partisanship following such a unifying message. This is today’s Democratic Party.”

Sen. John Cornyn tweeted, “Speaker Pelosi is clearly not happy camper. She should have taken her own advice a not started down the partisan impeachment path.”

Rep. Andy Biggs tweeted, “America, buckle up. The Democrats aren’t done with their harassment of our duly elected President.”

Nancy Pelosi’s rival for California’s 12th district, DeAnna Lorraine, said that Pelosi’s “disgraceful actions yesterday have woken up even more people.”

“The #PelosiTantrum has been going on for the past 30 years. She has never been a mature leader. She has always been corrupt, calculating and selfish. San Francisco has been poorly represented by her and needs change,” Lorraine said in another tweet.

Pelosi called Trump’s speech a “manifesto of mistruths” in a statement released after the speech ended.

Ahead of the speech, Pelosi did not introduce Trump with the “high honor” that is traditionally mentioned when introducing a president before a State of the Union speech. Afterward, Pelosi extended her hand toward Trump for a handshake, which he did not accept, possibly because he did not see the invitation.

A reporter confronted Pelosi after the scene, asking her, “Why did you rip the speech up, Madam Speaker?”

Pelosi replied, “Because it was the courteous thing to do considering the alternative.”

Trump also retweeted a Tuesday night tweet from the White House which took aim at Pelosi’s actions.

“Speaker Pelosi just ripped up: One of our last surviving Tuskegee Airmen. The survival of a child born at 21 weeks. The mourning families of Rocky Jones and Kayla Mueller. A service member’s reunion with his family. That’s her legacy,” the tweet said.
