A man armed with a knife was fatally shot by Veterans Affairs hospital officers after he refused to drop his weapon Wednesday night, Dallas police said.

It happened around 10:20 p.m. at the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the 4500 block of South Lancaster Road in east Oak Cliff.

According to Dallas police, a man who had arrived at the hospital for psychiatric issues was armed with a knife. VA police officers followed him after he tried to walk away and attempted to disarm him.

Their efforts were unsuccessful, Dallas police said, and two of the officers fired at him.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to an area hospital and died of his injuries, Dallas police said.

Dallas officers were not involved in the shooting, but the department’s Special Investigations Unit will handle the investigation.
