A man from the United Kingdom who had been deported from the U.S. in 2010 was busted by security personnel after he allegedly donned a wetsuit and swam across the Detroit River from Canada, landing on Zug Island.

Christopher Sagajllo, 56, was arrested on Dec. 13 after he was found by security officers on U.S. Steel Corp. property south of Detroit, the Associated Press reported.

He has since been charged in federal court with unlawful re-entry into the United States. He had been forced to leave the U.S. in 2010 when authorities discovered he’d overstayed his visa by seven years, the AP said.

Sagajllo told police he’d made the river crossing at night, reaching Zug Island in River Rouge.

“Border Patrol agents returned to Zug Island and were able to retrieve a wetsuit, gloves and several plastic bags left behind at the location described by Sagajllo,” agent Jason Bylow said in a court filing, the AP reported.

It was unclear if there was a specific reason Sagajllo was trying to return to the U.S. He remains behind bars.
