A 19-year-old soldier was found dead at Fort Jackson Wednesday morning.
An official with the Army base in Columbia said that the 19-year-old Army National Guard Soldier was found unresponsive at a field location. The soldier’s unit took life saving measures while contacting emergency medical services, according to a statement from base spokesperson Leslie Ann Sully.
The soldier’s name is being withheld by Fort Jackson officials until next-of-kin are notified about the death. The soldier was from Minnesota.
Fort Jackson paramedics transported the soldier to Providence Hospital where medical staff tried to revive the soldier but were unsuccessful, the statement said.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family members and teammates of the deceased soldier. We are providing every comfort and assistance that we can to all involved,” said Fort Jackson Commander Brig. Gen. Milford H. Beagle Jr.
An investigation into the cause of the death is being conducted, Sully said. More information will be provided as officials learn more.
Fort Jackson is the nation’s largest military basic training base with more than 50,000 recruits assigned there each year.
