104-year-old California Marine veteran asks for Valentine’s Day cards

People are showing the love for a 104-year-old World War II veteran who requested cards for Valentine’s Day.

KCRA Channel 3 reports cards from across northern California are coming in for U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Bill White. White likes to scrapbook and has collected items over the years, WGN Channel 9 reports. He now is hoping to add Valentine’s Day cards to his collection.

“I’ll save every one of them like I’ve been saving little things that have come up until right now and they’ll be a personal part of my history,” White tells WGN.

White served in the Marines for 30 years, retiring when he was 54 years old. He has a Purple Heart after being wounded by a grenade during the battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.

“The fact that I even survived is something. There weren’t too many of us,” White tells KTXL Channel 40. “I’m still here. I’m 104 — can’t complain.”
