A Vietnam veteran with no known family members will be laid to rest Tuesday morning at Beaufort National Cemetery, and the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office is asking members of the public to attend.
“We encourage people to come out,” said Janet Horton, administrative deputy coroner. “We want our military to know that we support them. … That’s the least I can do.”
Glenn Raymond Goff III of Hardeeville died Oct. 23 at age 70. He had been a specialist in the Army.
“I’ve probably called about 100 numbers from his phone trying to find next of kin,” Horton said.
She explained that Goff, who died of natural causes, had a few friends, but none of them knew anything about his family.
“We really don’t know a whole lot about him,” Horton said.
The service for Goff is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Members of the Disabled American Veterans chapter in Beaufort plan to attend and wear blue shirts and caps for the “forget me not” ceremony, the group posted on Facebook.
“When the Vietnam veterans returned home, they pretty much weren’t welcome,” said Horton. “I think it’s really important that we show up.”
