A man charged with killing a sailor in a crash at Fort Story last month was driving more than three times the posted speed limit, according to a document filed this week in court.
Data recovered from Nathaniel Lee Campbell’s Chevrolet pickup truck showed he was driving at 81 mph when he struck a Navy police patrol car head on, the bail determination sheet said. The speed limit in the area is 25 mph.
Killed in the crash was 23-year-old Oscar Jesus Temores, a petty officer third class who was working as a sentry at the base that night. Campbell, 38, of Shenandoah, was seriously injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police have said that alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash.
Campbell was charged in Virginia Beach General District Court with involuntary manslaughter. He’s being held without bond in the city jail. A jail spokeswoman said he has declined all requests for media interviews.
The crash occurred about 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at the military base. Police said Campbell sped through one of the gates on the wrong side of the road and that base security officers, including Temores, responded to the area.
Temores’ vehicle was struck on base, near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Leyte Street. He died later at a hospital.
While the incident occurred on federal property, state and federal authorities have concurrent jurisdiction in the area, said Macie Allen, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Beach commonwealth’s attorney. Naval Criminal Investigative Service officers are assisting with the investigation, she said.
Campbell has been out of work since March and was supporting himself with an inheritance from his parents, the bail checklist said. He’d only been in the Virginia Beach area “a couple of days,” the document said.
Campbell has a prior criminal history that includes convictions for assault and strangulation of a family member, and probation violations, the document said.
