A Camp Lejeune Marine was arrested on base on armed burglary charges in Florida.
Staff Sgt. Bruno Jesus Bego, 31, of Florida Avenue on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, was arrested on Oct. 18 by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office for crimes allegedly committed in his home state of Florida.
According to OCSO Col. Chris Thomas, Bego has outstanding charges in Florida for armed burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and criminal solicitation.
“Someone notified the Marine Corps that he was wanted and we picked him up on base,” Thomas said.
Bego was assigned to Camp Lejeune as a communication strategy and operations chief with Bravo Company, Headquarters and Support Battalion on Aug. 30 this year, according to Director for Communications Strategy and Operations for Camp Lejeune Nat Fahy.
Bego entered the Marine Corps on April 14, 2009, according to Fahy. He has had one overseas deployment to Afghanistan, from December 2010 to September 2011. His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with two stars in lieu of third award, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal and a Marine Corps Recruiting Ribbon. His past duty stations include Camp Lejeune from 2010 to 2012 and Recruiting Station, Jacksonville, Florida from 2013 to 2019.
Thomas said Bego is currently at the Onslow County Jail awaiting extradition.
