City police are asking the public for help identifying a man they say stole an 85-year-old military veteran’s wallet as he loaded groceries into his car outside a grocery store Tuesday afternoon.

Manchester police responded to the Market Basket on Elm Street around 1:22 p.m. Tuesday afternoon to investigate a report of theft. Police say a man stole an 85-year-old military veteran’s wallet as he was busy loading groceries into his car in the store’s parking lot.

According to police, images show the man driving slowly up and down rows of cars before choosing a victim. He then jumps out of his car and runs up behind the man and takes the wallet, police said.

According to police, the man is described as white, in his 30s, heavyset, approximately 6 feet tall with unshaven scruffy facial hair.

Police provided surveillance images of the thief provided by the Bank of America at 7-11 on Main Street, where police say he used the victim’s bank card. The man is believed to be driving a Volkswagen.

Anyone with information about the man or the incident is asked to contact Officer James Pittman at 792-5802.
