A 22-year-old Springfield man who died Monday, two days after his rescue from CJ Brown Reservoir at Buck Creek State Park, was a reserve in the military.
Caleb Diviak, 22, was unresponsive on Saturday afternoon when emergency personnel responded to his possible drowning. Diviak died Monday, the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office said.
U.S. Marine Corps spokeswoman Yvonne Carlock released information from Diviak’s military personnel file to the Springfield News-Sun on Tuesday.
Diviak started serving in the Reserves on March 3, 2014, until March 3, 2018, according to the information. He achieved the rank of Lance Corporal, E-3 and was a supply administrator.
For his service, he received the selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Facebook photos shared by Diviak show him in Marine uniforms. A photo shared in May of 2014 shows him in a uniform with the caption “Finally a US marine and proud to say it!!!”
Friends and family of Diviak took to social media to mourn his death. Many offered support and prayers for Diviak’s family.
“This is so sad. My prayers for him and his family,” one mourner said.
A 9-1-1 call obtained by the Springfield News-Sun indicates Diviak fell off a jet ski at the Buck Creek Reservoir.
“We need an ambulance out at the reservoir right now,” a woman who identified herself as the girlfriend of Diviak’s father tells a dispatcher. “A 22-year-old boy fell off a jet ski, we got him in a boat … and we’re doing CPR right now.”
She tells the dispatcher that they were near Campground Beach when the incident took place.
An Ohio Department of Natural Resources officers and other bystanders rendered aid and administered CPR before the victim was taken by Care Flight to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, according to the ODNR.
The man was wearing a life jacket at the time of the water rescue.
ODNR officials say that is the most important thing you can do while out on the water. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources officials are investigating the incident.
