A Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson paratrooper was killed and another soldier was injured Friday in a training accident near Fairbanks, the U.S. Army Alaska said.
Spc. Marquise Gabriel Elliott, 25, and the other soldier were in a Humvee in the Yukon Training Area around 3 p.m. when the vehicle rolled, according to an Army statement. The Yukon Training Area is southeast of Fort Wainwright.
Elliott was taken by helicopter to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Army statement. The injured soldier, who was not named, was treated for “injuries to his lower extremities,” according to the statement.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, the statement said.
Both soldiers were members of the B Battery, 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
Elliott, originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, had been in the Army since 2015. He’d served in Oklahoma and Georgia before being stationed in Alaska in 2016, according to the statement. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2017 and had received awards including the Army Commendation Medal for combat.
Lt. Col. Tobias Bennett, commander of the 2-377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment, said in the statement that Elliot was a “gifted and intelligent paratrooper” with a disciplined work ethic.
