At least 20 West Point cadets have been involved a major accident in Orange County, New York, and emergency services responded to the scene Thursday morning.

It is being reported that one cadet is dead following the incident, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point confirmed the death.

“One cadet is reported deceased, 20 cadets and two soldiers are wounded that were involved in a Light Medium Tactical Vehicle accident that occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. off Route 293,” it tweeted.

It had initially been reported that one cadet is dead following the accident when a light medium tactical vehicle overturned, and ABC News cited a source “familiar with the incident” who confirmed the death.

Other outlets had reported that at least one cadet had been airlifted with “serious injuries” and was described as “non-responsive,” and up to five other cadets had been taken to the hospital with pain but were expected to be alright, per NBC New York on Thursday morning.

ABC said 20 cadets were involved, as well as three active duty soldiers. Army and first responders were on the scene treating injuries, according to the report.

The crash reportedly took place around 7:30 a.m. local time, and the Military Academy sent out a tweet at 8:18 a.m. confirming the accident and advising drivers to avoid Route 293.

“There has been an accident in the vicinity of the Camp Natural Bridge training site. Emergency vehicles are responding. Please avoid Route 293. More information will follow,” the Academy said.

Camp Natural Bridge is a summer training location for West Point Cadets.
