A Houston family took matters into its own hands Tuesday night, killing one of three suspects who broke into a home and pistol-whipped a father of three, Houston police reported.
It happened around 11:30 p.m. at a home in southwest Houston. According to police, three male suspects hid behind some bushes as they waited for someone to come home. When the father arrived, the suspects jumped him, forced him inside and beat him up, police said.
At the same time, the family’s two daughters and a teenage friend were upstairs, police said. They managed to hide and alert a patrolling constable through the home’s panic alarm.
As the suspects started taking items, including a safe, the victim’s adult son and wife arrived home in two separate cars. The son sneaked into the home through the back door, police said, grabbed a gun, confronted the suspects and shot one of them.
As the suspects fled, one jumped on the hood of the wife’s car but was thrown off when she put it in gear and sped away, police said. She eventually alerted police at an area Whataburger, according to Houston television station KHOU.
The injured suspect was armed, police said, and had been shot several times. He died later at an area hospital.
The other two suspects stole the family’s gray minivan and are still at large, according to police.
