An Iwakuni-based Marine was held by Tokyo Metropolitan Police after attempting to “scale a fence” near the German embassy in Tokyo’s Roppongi district, base officials confirmed Wednesday morning.

The unidentified female corporal — assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12 — was placed in protective custody at about 2 a.m. Friday, Marine Aircraft Group 12 spokesman Capt. Marco Valenzuela told Stars and Stripes on Wednesday morning.

She was not arrested and has returned to MCAS Iwakuni, he said.

The Marine was on a trip sponsored by the base and attempted the climb after a night of drinking, according to a report Tuesday by the online news site Tokyo Reporter.

No injuries or damages resulted from the incident, and the Marine Corps has not filed charges against the servicemember, Valenzuela said.

No other Marines were involved, he added.

MCAS Iwakuni is one of the largest aviation bases in Japan. It is the home for the Marine aircraft group, the Navy’s Carrier Air Wing 5 and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Fleet Wing 31.
