Nearly 200 injured U.S. Marines, veterans and international wounded warrior athletes are set to converge on Camp Pendleton to compete in a slew of different sports during the ninth annual Marine Corps Trials Feb. 26 to March 9.
The adaptive sports invitational hosted by the Wounded Warrior Regiment is organized into three competing teams. One team represents Wounded Warrior Battalion-East based at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Another is from Wounded Warrior Battalion-West at Camp Pendleton, and the third is an international team of wounded warriors from Colombia, France, Germany, Georgia, Italy and the Netherlands.
The competitions include archery, cycling, rowing, shooting, power lifting, sitting volleyball and swimming along with track and field, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby.
Part of the Warrior Athlete Reconditioning Program, the trials promote rehabilitation for recovering service members, serve as an opportunity to cultivate camaraderie and the warrior ethos, and provide a venue for showcasing mental and physical achievements.

Participants can bid for selection to compete in the annual Department of Defense Warrior Games, which include other branches of the military. The Warrior Games bring together injured troops from around the world to compete in sports ranging from track and field to swimming, archery and cycling.
The opening ceremony for the trials is slated for 9:30 a.m. Feb. 26 and the competition will run from March 2 to March 9.
