This is a breaking story. Please check back for updates.

A total of seven law enforcement officers have been shot in South Carolina on Wednesday evening, according to reports.

Florence County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Glenn Kirby originally confirmed that three Florence County deputies and two city police officers were shot, the Associated Press reported. However, Florence city spokesman, John Wukela said the number has been updated to a total of seven law enforcement officers shot, one of whom succumbed to their injuries.

Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken told WBTW that at least one city police officer has died. The condition of the remaining officers is not yet known.

The suspect is now in custody and the situation is considered contained.

Officers were serving a warrant in the upscale Vintage Place neighborhood when they suddenly came under fire.

Chief Kirby said the suspect was taken into custody after surrendering to deputies following negotiations with law enforcement. He was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

An additional 20-year-old victim was shot inside the home, but is confirmed to be alive.

Around 6 p.m., the Florence County Emergency Management (FCEM) agency announced that the situation was contained, tweeting, “The active shooting situation is over and the suspect is in custody. We are asking everyone to stay away from Vintage Place as there is still an active crime investigation in progress.”

Charlotte-based ATF agents have responded to the scene.

The FCEM announced the situation at approximately 5 p.m.: “Due to a high priority call in Vintage Place off of Hoffmeyer Rd in FLORENCE. There is an active shooter incident in progress at this time. We are advising everyone to stay away from this area. We have FCSO along with City PD and other first responders handling this situation.”
