Virgin Islands police have positively identified a burned body found in the trunk of a car on St. Croix in August, according to a press release.

Naji Jarvis, 21, had been reported missing on Aug. 27, while on leave from the U.S. Army in the Virgin Islands, police said.

Police and firefighters responded to a structure fire in William’s Delight about 11:45 a.m. on Aug. 28. On arrival, they discovered a dark gray four-door Toyota Yaris that Jarvis had been driving ablaze inside a garage. When the fire was extinguished, authorities found Jarvis’s remains.

Jarvis’s death was the 22nd homicide reported in 2018 in the territory, including one vehicular homicide.

The most recent homicide reported in the territory was the Sept. 6 discovery of Akuojo Jackman, 29, in the Mutual Homes housing community on St. Croix — and the 26th homicide reported in the territory so far in 2018.

Anyone with information about the disappearance or the homicide can call the Criminal Investigations Bureau on St. Croix at 340-778-2211.

Information may also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers USVI at 1-800-222-8477.
