‘No real world active shooter incident’ at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, officials say

UPDATE AT 3:50PM EST: WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB SAYS ‘NO REAL WORLD ACTIVE SHOOTER’ 

Wright-Patterson AFB tweeted an update to the situation, saying: “There was no real world active shooter incident on Wright-Patterson AFB and base personnel remain safe.”

An additional update said that while the simulated shooter drill was occurring, an individual called 911 believing the drill to be a real shooter situation. Law enforcement responded and swept the area. Upon encountering a locked door in the hospital, an officer discharged their firearm to breach the door and complete the security sweep.

“The scene has been declared safe and all personnel have been advised to avoid the base hospital area for the time being,” the update said.

UPDATE AT 3:05PM EST: ‘ACTIVE SHOOTER’ REPORT TOOK PLACE AFTER SIMULATED SHOOTER DRILL; CORONER NOT CALLED TO SCENE

A worker at the base hospital told local 2 NEWS that a base-wide active shooter drill was taking place earlier. Upon the conclusion of the drill, a real active shooter situation was reported to all base workers.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office told 2 NEWS they had not been called to the scene as of 2:00 p.m.

Reports say a man barricaded himself in a fourth-floor room of the base hospital, prompting a police response.

There were reports of an active shooter at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, just east of Dayton, on Thursday.

As of approximately 2:45 p.m. EST, the all-clear was given, according to an alert, WHIO TV 7 reported.

People were told to remain clear of the medical center.

The base had earlier tweeted that there was an incident, and that personnel are to shelter in place.

“At approximately 12:40 p.m., base emergency responders (security forces, fire department) responded to a reported Active Shooter incident at the base hospital. Base personnel have been directed to shelter in place until the incident is investigated,” the Air Force base tweeted.

Previously, it had tweeted: “At approximately 12:40 p.m. today, base emergency responders, including security forces and fire department, responded to a reported incident in building 830, the Wright-Patt Hospital. There are no additional details at this time. Information will be released as it is available.”

“Our first priority in any emergency incident is to protect the men and women at Wright-Patt. Our base security forces defenders and fire department personnel are trained to quickly assess situations and take necessary action. An investigation is under way,” it added.

The ATF Columbus Field Division was responding to the incident, as was the Ohio State Highway Patrol and local police.

Area schools went into lockdown after an initial alert went out.

One local university, Wright State University, said in a Facebook post that the incident had been “contained on the base.” Their update was posted at 1:33 p.m.

No additional details have been released about the incident.
