Monday’s death was investigated by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), but no additional details were provided, according to Cmdr. Dave Hecht, a spokesman for Naval Air Force Atlantic, the Associated Press reported.
Under normal circumstances, details regarding the sailor and his squadron would not be released until 24 hours after family is notified, but that is not the case when an incident has been ruled a suicide.
In the event of a suicide, no public release of the sailor’s identity or what squadron the sailor was assigned to will be delivered.
No further information is available at this time.
It was originally reported to the public that a sailor who was part of a Norfolk-based helicopter squadron was killed in an accident on the flight line at Naval Station Norfolk.
The cause of the incident was under investigation.
