A promotion and a reassignment across the pond is possible for a Camp Lejeune commanding general.

The Pentagon announced Wednesday that President Donald J. Trump was nominating Marine Corps Maj. Gen. John K. Love, who is currently serving as the commanding general, 2d Marine Division, at Camp Lejeune, for the appointment to the rank of lieutenant general and for reassignment as the U.S. representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Military Committee.

According to NATO’s website, the Military Committee is the senior military authority in NATO and the oldest permanent body in NATO after the North Atlantic Council. It is the primary source of military advice to the North Atlantic Council and the Nuclear Planning Group, and gives direction to the two Strategic Commanders.

If confirmed and reassigned to the 29-member person NATO Military Committee, Love would replace Navy Vice Adm. John N. Christenson as the U.S. military representative.

According to Love’s Marine Corps biography, Love served in several different levels, including command of the 8th Marine Regimental Combat Team during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2009.

Since becoming a general officer, his assignments have included: chief of staff, Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO, where he participated in NATO Operation Unified Protector in 2011, the enforcement of United Nations Security Council Resolutions in Libya; the deputy commanding general, II Marine Expeditionary Force; commanding general, 2d Marine Expeditionary Brigade; the Marine Corps director of operations; and as the commanding general, 2d Marine Division.

Love is a native of Texas and graduated from Texas Tech in 1984.
