The U.S. Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers of “competence, character and compassion” in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy, and they attend for four years. Midshipmen graduate with a bachelor of science degree and commission as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps before going on to serve at least five years in the Navy or Marine Corps.
Notable graduates include the following:
- 1 President of the United States
- 3 Cabinet Members
- 19 Ambassadors
- 24 Members of Congress
- 5 State Governors
- 5 Secretaries of the Navy
- 1 Secretary of the Air Force
- 5 Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
- 4 Vice Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
- 29 Chiefs of Naval Operations
- 9 Commandants of the Marine Corps
- 2 Nobel Prize Winners
- 73 Medal of Honor Recipients
This is the academy’s Honor Concept:
Midshipmen are persons of integrity: They stand for that which is right.
They tell the truth and ensure that the truth is known.
They do not lie.
They embrace fairness in all actions. They ensure that work submitted as their own is their own, and that assistance received from any source is authorized and properly documented.
They do not cheat.
They respect the property of others and ensure that others are able to benefit from the use of their own property.
They do not steal.
