A wounded soldier who served in Afghanistan and sustained injuries there has successfully undergone the world’s first total penis and scrotum transplant, doctors at Johns Hopkins said this week.

The veteran’s genitals were blown off by a bomb, and doctors performed a 14-hour surgery last month to transplant a full penis, scrotum and portion of the abdominal wall, they said.

“We are hopeful that this transplant will help restore near-normal urinary and sexual functions for this young man,” said W.P. Andrew Lee, M.D., professor and director of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Fox 5 reported.

A deceased donor provided the penis, scrotum (not including testicles) and partial abdominal wall.

Doctors said the patient is recovering from the March 26 surgery and is likely to be discharged from the hospital this week.
