“My thoughts and those of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan are with the families and friends of our fallen and wounded service members,” Gen. John Nicholson, Commander of U.S. Forces Afghanistan, said in a statement. “Their valiancy in battle, and that of the brave Afghan partners they fought alongside, will endure in our hearts and history.”
The service member’s identity has not been released yet, pending notification of next of kin.
No further details were available at this time.
This is only second American service member killed in Afghanistan this year.
On New Year’s Day, Sgt. 1st Class Mihail Golin, a 10th Special Forces Group operator, was killed in a small arms fire engagement in Afghanistan.
