A 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) soldier was arrested Sunday evening on an open count of homicide after he allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife.

The Crestview Police Department responded around 6:42 p.m. Sunday to a 911 call reporting a gunshot victim at 1232 Northview Drive in the Countryview Estates neighborhood. Derek McKinney, 32, was arrested at the residence, according to a press release from the Crestivew Police Department.

Responding officers found McKinney’s wife, Natasha McKinney, 34, on the floor in a bedroom at the home they shared. Okaloosa County EMS responded minutes later and pronounced Natasha McKinney dead, the press release said.

According to his arrest report, McKinney, who has his wife’s name tattooed on his breast, identified himself to dispatch as the shooter. He even provided a clothing description — a white tank top and red shorts, the report said.

He also told them he was administering CPR to his wife.

When officers arrived, he came out of the house with his hands up. Officers observed blood on his tank top. He was ordered to get on the ground, at which point he took off his shirt and made a comment to officers which was redacted from the report.

His wife was discovered lying on her back in the master bedroom with blood on her face. A black semi-automatic handgun was found on the floor near her head and a cell phone was found near her feet.

After being read his rights, the suspect made a statement that was also redacted from the report.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement responded, and upon receipt of a search warrant, assisted Crestview Police in investigating the scene of the shooting.

The homicide remains under investigation.
