On Tuesday, second grade students at Hunter Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh, N.C., were given a worksheet that described white privilege, according to ABC 11.
As part of a Parent Teacher Association initiative, the worksheet was an 11-step guide that details steps on how to identify and understand white privilege.
“He’s 8 years old. What does he need to know about racism or white privilege,” said one mother, Amber Pabon.
The worksheet links to outside resources that are relevant to it, including “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” written by feminist Peggy McIntosh.
“(Begin to) Understand the Concept of White Privilege” is the title of step three. “White dominates the culture” is the emphasis of this step.

One excerpt from step three says: “I have the privilege to forget about my White Privilege. For white people at least, this is a lifelong process, full of inevitable fu*k-ups but also of epiphanies.”
Other steps in the worksheet describe their version of the difference between racism and discrimination, and “overt” and “covert” white supremacy, cultural appropriation and “reverse racism.”
Step four asserts that only white people can be racist.

Although the worksheet was handed out to the students, the Parent Teacher Association contends that the message is really for the parents.
The material was also apparently discussed in the classroom.
Hunter Magnet’s PTA policy is to hand out the worksheet to the students, email them, and then add them to their Facebook page.
The PTA said they have had a very positive response to the program, however parents do have the right to decline participating in the program.
