President Donald Trump wants to send the U.S. military to guard the southern border with Mexico “until we can have a wall,” he said Tuesday while speaking to reporters at the White House.

The move would help prevent illegal crossings, Trump said.

“Until we can have a wall and proper security, we are going to be guarding our border with the military. That’s a big step,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “We really haven’t done that before, certainly not very much before.”

The Hill pointed out that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was sitting next to Trump when he made the statement.

Currently, U.S. Border Patrol is in charge of patrolling and maintaining the border.

Trump also addressed a caravan of immigrants that was attempting to travel to the U.S. from Honduras.

“I told Mexico very strongly that you’re going to have to do something about the caravans that are coming,” Trump said, including the one from Honduras, which he said was now “breaking up very rapidly.”

“Mexico has very strong immigration laws. We should have those laws,” the President said. “We have immigration laws that are laughed at by everybody. We need the wall, we need the protection, and we need to change our immigration laws at the border and elsewhere.”
