Adrian Wiggins, a former nurse assistant at a VA medical center, has been charged with a civil rights offense and indicted by a federal grand jury.
Wiggins, 53, allegedly struck a resident of the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, in Tennessee, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Thursday. Charges include depriving the resident of the right to be free from the use of unreasonable force.
“The indictment alleges that on January 8, 2017, Wiggins repeatedly struck an individual identified by the initials W.B., a resident of the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and caused bodily injury as a result,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
If convicted, Wiggins faces a sentence of no greater than 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
A federal district court judge will impose Wiggin’s sentence detailed by the advisory U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation Memphis Field Office investigated this case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys David Pritchard and Reagan Taylor of the Western District of Tennessee and Trial Attorney Rachel Kincaid of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division are prosecuting the case.
