A self-driving Uber car struck and killed a pedestrian in Arizona, police said Monday.
Following up on my earlier tweet, Uber car was in autonomous mode with a human safety driver and it struck a woman (not a bicyclist) who walked into street. She has died. We think this is the first pedestrian killed by an autonomous vehicle. Uber is cooperating. Story coming

This is believed to be the first such fatality of its kind.
The self-driving Uber car was in “autonomous” mode with an operator behind the wheel at the time of the collision.
Uber has temporarily paused all of its self-driving vehicles across the country following the incident in Tempe.
Fox News reported that Tempe Police Sgt. Ronald Elcock said the woman was walking “outside of a crosswalk” when she was hit.
She died after being taken to a nearby hospital, police said.
