Mass shooting at Florida high school: 17 killed, suspect is former student

UPDATE, 6:28 p.m. EST: Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said there are 17 people dead after the mass shooting.

UPDATE, 6:12 p.m. EST: There are at least 16 people dead after the Florida high school mass shooting, law enforcement officials have told CNN.

UPDATE, 5:33 p.m. EST: The suspected shooter has been identified as Nikolas Cruz.

The suspect is a former student of the high school, and was reportedly arrested off the high school campus without incident.

The Miami Herald reported that he’s 19 years old, and might have been identified as a “potential threat to students” in the past, a teacher told the publication.

“We were told last year that he wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack on him,” math teacher Jim Gard told the Herald; he said Cruz was in his class last year. “There were problems with him last year threatening students, and I guess he was asked to leave campus.”

UPDATE, 4:38 p.m. EST: There are “at least 14 victims” of the Florida high school mass shooting on Wednesday afternoon, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School is still on lockdown.

It is believed there are between 20 and 50 people who are hurt.

The Washington Post reported that the Broward County school superintendent said there are “several fatalities.”

UPDATE, 4:10 p.m. EST: The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said a suspect has been taken into custody.

UPDATE, 3:29 p.m. EST: The Broward County Sheriff said the shooter is still at large, and that there are 20 to 50 people who have been shot. The school remains on lockdown.

There was an active shooter situation in a south Florida high school on Wednesday afternoon.

There were initially reports of at least 20 people being shot at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. The Sheriff’s Office has since reported between 20 and 50 people have been hurt.
