When Ruger discontinued the budget-friendly 9E model, many people were left wondering why they cancelled that model. We later learned that Ruger was taking the popular and well-received trigger and hammer action from the Ruger LCP II and adding it to a new compact size pistol they called the Security-9.
The Ruger Security-9 is a budget-friendly pistol that has received a lot of attention. The popularity of budget handguns has grown over the past couple of years, and the Ruger Security-9 fits the bill for those looking for a quality 9mm handgun that won’t break the bank. The MSRP is $379, but I have found the average online price to linger around $275, which is an incredible price for everything this pistol has to offer.
The Ruger Security-9 sports a 4-inch barrel, a single action trigger that breaks at 5.75 pounds, full 1913 pictinny rail for accessories, a u-notch drift adjustable rear sight with a pinned in front sight and a thumb safety, and it ships with two 15-round highly polished magazines. The grip is mildly textured for a firm grasp of the gun without being overly aggressive to prevent irritating the skin for concealed carry. As already mentioned, it has an enclosed hammer with a light single action trigger that was modeled after the Ruger LCP II.
The Security-9 is also fairly light compared to other compact-sized handguns. Ruger uses a glass-filled nylon frame. It’s basically a polymer frame with glass fibers blended in to give it a slightly different feel while keeping the weight down. Unloaded with the magazine, the Security-9 weighs in at an even 23 ounces and it’s loaded weight with a full 15 rounds is 29.5 ounces. The light weight of the gun, its 15-round capacity and the smooth trigger action will make the Security-9 a popular concealed carried choice.
I took the Ruger Security-9 to the range. Being a budget pistol, I wanted to make sure the gun didn’t fire like the average cheap gun that had decent features but lacked accuracy and reliability. On a freezing cold day, the Security-9 surpassed my expectations. Right out of the box I was able to hit my targets with ease from 12 yards. With numb fingers, I backed up to 17 yards and once again the Security-9 shot very well. The range session also proved the Security-9 performs well in extremely cold conditions.
