Cathy Clamar put a smile on the face of a World War II veteran recently by doing a good deed for his dog.
The Back Mountain woman spotted the little dog, Shilo, tied to a pole outside the Rite Aid pharmacy last week while the veteran was inside shopping.
The dog, which has two different colored eyes, was shivering a bit, so Clamar decided to buy the pup a sweater when she went inside the store. The Shavertown woman was hoping someone had not abandoned the dog there.
When she got done shopping, she met the veteran and his dog outside the store and gave them the sweater.
Michael Mitsock lives near the store and shops there regularly.
“To find out he was a veteran made me feel good about it,” Clamar, 51, said, noting her grandfather also served in World War II and her father was in the Army. “He was so thankful. It was my good deed for the day. The dog is so cute. I love animals.”
Mitsock even took time to make a joke about the name of his dog, saying it came from the Battle of Shiloh in the Civil War.
“He said, ‘But I didn’t fight in the Civil War. I was in World War II,’” Clamar recalled.
Moved by the random act of kindness, workers of Rite Aid had the three pose for a photo to capture the special moment. They then contacted The Citizens’ Voice to share the good news story.
Clamar said she wasn’t expecting any recognition as a result of her good deed.
“I was just so happy to do something nice for him,” Clamar said.
