Iraq hanged 38 ISIS and al Qaeda militants in a mass execution after being sentenced to death on terrorism charges, Reuters reported.
The 38 executions took place in a single day at a prison in Nassiriya, Iraq, Reuters reported.
“The prison administration executed on Thursday in the presence of Justice Minister Haidar al-Zameli, in Nasiriyah prison, 38 death row prisoners belonging to Al-Qaeda or Daesh (ISIS) accused of terrorist activities,” Dakhel Kazem, a senior official in the provincial council, told AFP.
According to the justice ministry, the appeals process had been exhausted before the executions were carried out.
Most of the accused terrorists who were put to death were Iraqi citizens; however, according to AFP, one of them was a Swedish citizen.
The execution was the largest mass execution in the country since Sept. 24, when 42 militants were executed.
On Dec. 10, Iraq declared victory over ISIS after ousting the terrorist organization from major territories.
