Memorial service planned for Border Patrol agent as FBI investigates his mysterious death

Rogelio Martinez (FBI)

Memorial services for a fallen Border Patrol agent are planned for this weekend while FBI investigators dig into the details of his mysterious death.

Agent Rogelio Martinez died early Sunday after suffering traumatic head injuries and other “miscellaneous physical injuries,” according to the FBI.

He and another agent, whose name has not been released, were found with injuries requiring advanced medical care Saturday afternoon in Van Horn after reportedly “responding to activity” in the small town roughly 120 miles southeast of El Paso.

Federal authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the two agents were assaulted. Martinez was found unconscious with broken bones, and the surviving agent has no recollection of what happened.

A visitation for Martinez will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Funeraria Del Angel Martin Central in El Paso, with a vigil at 7 p.m. The agent’s funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

The FBI is offering up to a $25,000 reward for information regarding the case. Those with any information or tips can call 1-800-255-5324.
