Alabama native Jim Nabors has passed away. He was 87 years old.
He is most famous for his role on the “Andy Griffith Show,” where he played TV character Gomer Pyle, a gas station mechanic.
Nabors also played a Marine on the spinoff series, “Gomer Pyle USMC,” which was on TV for five years during the 1960s.
The character Gomer Pyle was promoted to lance corporal in 2001, and then to corporal in 2007.
In 2001, the U.S. Marine Corps made Nabors an honorary member.
He was also on several variety shows, hosted TV specials and had roles in films.
And, Nabors sang “Back Home Again in Indiana” at the start of the of the Indianapolis 500 for 42 years, from 1972 to 2014.
The U.S. Marine Corps posted on Twitter in memory of Nabors on Thursday, tweeting: “Semper Fi, Gomer Pyle. Rest in peace Jim Nabors, one of the few ever to be named an Honorary Marine.”
