The U.S. Navy this week identified the sailor who was found dead aboard the USS John C. Stennis aircraft carrier on Saturday.

Texas native Engineman Fireman Recruit Akiree Pointer, 22, was found dead on Nov. 25, while the aircraft carrier was at Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, Washington.

Stennis Spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Frederick Martin told the Associated Press that Pointer “showed no obvious and apparent cause of death.”

His family has been notified, and an investigation is underway as to the cause of death, the Navy said.

The Navy offered it condolences to Pointer’s family and friends.

Pointer’s previous commands included the Naval Recruit Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal.

The USS John C. Stennis is currently in port preparing for future operations and its next scheduled deployment.
