A female college student was recorded on Oct. 4 throwing her drink on two men who had reportedly been kneeling during the national anthem at a Los Angeles Lakers pre-season basketball game.
The female, identified as Haley Perea, was filmed by her friend, Savannah Sugg, throwing a drink on two Lakers fans and yelling: “Excuse me, this is for the national anthem you pieces of sh-t.”
As the two of them walk away, one of the women calls them “f—ers.”
It is unclear if the men approached the two women after the video recording stopped.
Sugg then reportedly posted the video on Twitter with the caption: “‘Take a kneel for the land of the slaves.’ Disrespect our flag and our country and that’s how we’ll react.”
After receiving criticism for their actions, both Sugg and Perea deleted their social media accounts.
Both women are students at California Baptist University.
The university issued a statement following the incident:
“On Wednesday, October 4, 2017, an incident occurred at a pre-season NBA basketball game at the Ontario Citizens Business Bank Arena. While this was not an event affiliated with California Baptist University, two current CBU students were involved.
On Thursday morning, October 5, 2017, CBU learned of this incident and initiated an investigation and plans to take appropriate action. CBU does not condone or support the behavior depicted in the recording of the incident.
CBU takes this matter very seriously and is cooperating with law enforcement and arena management.”
People on social media called their actions “racist.”
“Cal Baptist’s Statement on Racist Students Savannah Sugg & Haley Perea Throwing Drink at Teens During Anthem,” the CEO of Black Sports Online, Robert Littal, tweeted.
Another Twitter user wrote: “2 [Cal Baptist] students pour drinks and racial slurs over 2 [sitting] during anthem. Some things haven’t changed.”
