(VIDEO) Remington 870 TAC-14: Small but powerful home defense, or just plain fun at the range

I just spent a week at Gunsite Academy in Paulden, Arizona, where I had the opportunity to fire and review the new Remington 870 TAC-14 pump action 12 gauge shotgun.

Remington took the proven and reliable model 870 12 gauge shotgun and scaled it down to a short 26.3-inch shotgun. The 870 TAC-14 sports a Shockwave Raptor pistol grip, four plus one capacity, Magpul fore-end grip, black oxide receiver with the same controls as the full-size 870 and a 14-inch cylinder bore barrel. For those who feel a shotgun is a great home defense firearm, the TAC-14 is a game-changer.

The smaller 870 TAC-14 has a few benefits that many people will find appealing. The short and light platform offers the user more options when storing the shotgun. It could be easily concealed in the closet or tucked under a bed for quick access. Being so light, the TAC-14 is effortless to maneuver, making it easier for smaller people or senior citizens to transport and operate. The fore-end charging stroke (or pump action) uses minimal movement to operate, and the cylinder bore barrel is ideal for any of the 12 gauge loads. To top it off, it’s a blast to shoot.

On the range at Gunsite Academy, were were taught to draw forward the 870 TAC-14 using fully extended arms. When firing, it delivered all the power the 12 gauge offers. We were using Remington’s standard Ultimate Defense and Managed Recoil 00 buckshot. The 870 TAC-14 combined with the Remington Ultimate Defense loads were a combination that was effective and functioned flawlessly.

The MSRP for the 870 TAC-14 is $443; however, the average street price at your local gun store should be right around $370. I believe this shorter 12 gauge platform will grow in popularity as people understand the features and benefits of this small and lightweight package.

In the video below, I demonstrate the features of the 870 TAC-14  (and 870 TAC-14 Marine Model), along with shooting both arms extended and from the hip. I have always been a big fan of the Remington 870 shotgun, and this 870 TAC-14 is an excellent 12 gauge choice for those who enjoy a smaller and lighter package. Watch the video and let us know your thoughts on the new Remington 870 TAC-14.
