From sea to shining sea, the Remington 870 is known to be among the finest and most reliable shotguns ever produced. Millions of Americans choose, with confidence, the Remington 870 for their hunting, competition and home defense needs. It is also a popular law enforcement shotgun because when an officer’s life is on the line, they need a shotgun that effectively works every time when duty calls.
The bottom line is, when you need a shotgun to consistently function exactly as it is intended, the all-American Remington 870 fits the bill.
I recently reviewed the Remington 870 Express Tactical 12 gauge pump action shotgun. This shotgun is as much of an American tradition as baseball and apple pie. The all-purpose 870 Express Tactical has some features that would make the world’s most negative shotgun critic smile.
Let’s start with the basics. This model offers an 18.5-inch barrel with black synthetic furniture. The Express Tactical 12 gauge literally pumps in all the technology and machining that has made the Remington 870 the most popular shotgun in the U.S.
Now for the upgrades.
The ghost ring sights are made by XS Sight Systems. The circular rear sight (or ghost ring) is machined into the 1913 rail, which offers the user to add an optic of their choice. The front sight is a ramped dot that aligns perfectly with the ghost ring rear sight. The magazine tube has a factory-installed two-shell extension that accepts six, 2.75-inch shells; along with one fed in the chamber, this equals a hefty seven-round capacity. Connecting the magazine tube and the barrel is a factory-installed barrel clamp. A barrel clamp is typically an after market part that is added separately; however, Remington added the barrel clamp right from the factory. Below the barrel clamp is a swivel sling mount that couples well with the fixed sling mount below the shoulder stock. Finally, the Express Tactical 870 offers a door-breaching ported choke that not only looks super cool and intimidating, but provides an additional defensive tool if needed.
