The Egyptian military said a tank driver is responsible for saving the lives of dozens of people after driving over an explosive-laden vehicle.
The Egyptian Ministry of Defense released video of a car approaching a checkpoint in the North Sinai region. The tank runs over the vehicle, which reportedly contained four militants and a large amount of explosives.
The tank driver then runs over the vehicle with the tank. The vehicle can be seen smoking for about a minute before it completely explodes.
The Egyptian military said seven people, including two children, were killed in the explosion.
The Ministry of Defense said that if the tank driver did not act, as many as 50 people could have been killed if the attack was successful.
The Sinai Peninsula has been in a state of emergency since October 2014 when a terrorist attack claimed the lives of 33 Egyptian soldiers.
Militants have been carrying out attacks in Egypt following the ousting of the former president of Egypt, Mohammed Morsi, by General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
