A person who attempted to attack a police officer with a hammer near the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris has been shot, according to multiple reports.
It is now being reported that the situation is under control, and police said that the “operation is over and attacker who targeted police with a hammer has been shot and injured,” NBC News tweeted.
The attacker attempted to assault an officer with a hammer outside the cathedral. That officer is also injured.
The Paris Prosecutor’s Office said the assailant also had two knives.
Paris Police said that “French counter-terrorism police are opening an investigation into the incident,” according to NBC News.
Earlier this morning, the Associated Press tweeted a breaking alert that an “officer shot and injured an attacker near Notre Dame cathedral.”
Police at the time told people to avoid the area. The cathedral was sealed off, and those inside were told not to leave.
France has been the site of terror attacks in the past, including a truck explosion on Bastille Day in 2016 that killed dozens of people.
