An investigation is underway in a weekend shooting in the Los Angeles area where former NBA star Brandon Roy shielded some children from gunfire and took a bullet in the process. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department say that a group was in front of a home when the suspects approached them and began firing and then fled the scene. Authorities are still unsure of a motive.
Roy, 32, was outside his grandmother’s home when the shooting began and was just a bystander. Roy was shot in the leg while guarding the children around him. Two people opened fire and Roy was one of four people who suffered non-life threatening wounds. They were transported to a local hospital and released. Roy is expected to make a full recovery and is back in Washington State
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Brandon and his family during this time,” Roy’s former teammates said.
While Roy’s NBA career was short due to knee problems, it was also remarkable. Prior to his retirement in 2012, Roy was selected to the All-Star team three times in his first four seasons.
