On Thursday, two U.S. service members were killed during a firefight while conducting a joint U.S.-Afghan operation in the Achin District of Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan. Pentagon Spokesman U.S. Navy Capt. Jeff Davis confirmed the news to CNN.
“Their identities, service, and unit affiliations are being withheld pending next of kin notification. US Forces Afghanistan will provide more information soon,” Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said.
CNN reported that a U.S. official said a third service member was wounded with non life-threatening injuries. The U.S. official also told CNN that the service members were Special Operations Forces soldiers.
The operation was targeting ISIS-K, also known as the Khorasan group, which is located in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. ISIS-K is the same organization that was targeted by the United States with the 22,000-pound GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb in the Achin District earlier this month.
