Marine Expeditionary Units, MEUs, are units strategically located aboard U.S. Navy vessels around the world. Ready to go into any scenario at a moment’s notice, Marines are normally moved using helicopters. This method of deployment is reliable, efficient and provides the flexibility to bring the troops wherever needed without the use of parachutes.
However, nothing in life is infallible. Even the most reliable aircraft with incredible safety records can, and do, go down. When this happens at sea while in route from the ship to the targeted locations, troops get trapped inside a metal box not designed to float. This is why it’s important to train even for the most unlikely of the situations.
In this video, Marines with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit learn how to escape from a submerged aircraft while training at the Helicopter Underwater Egress Trainer, giving them the tools to greatly increase the probabilities of survival in case of a helicopter crashing. For the looks of it, it seems like a very tough training.
