Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), formerly Theater High Altitude Area Defense, is a U.S. Army anti-ballistic missile system which is designed to shoot down short, medium, and intermediate range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase by using a hit-to-kill approach. The system has been in the middle of a fierce debate recently due the recent to the deployment of the first elements of the advanced anti-missile defense system to South Korea in response to North Korea’s test of four ballistic missiles, despite angry opposition from China.
Even though South Korea and United States authorities have said that the missile system is aimed only at curbing North Korean provocations, China has objected the THAAD deployment saying its territory is the target of the system’s far-reaching radar.
This video shows the U.S. deploying the THAAD Missile Defense System to South Korea in order to send a message to North Korea over their recent missile tests.
