Drexel University professor George Ciccariello is facing major backlash for tweeting that the sight of an airline passenger giving up their first class seat for a uniformed service member makes him sick. Ciccariello claims that when he saw the act of kindness and gratitude he was compelled to “try not to vomit’ or “yell about Mosul.”
This isn’t the first time Ciccariello has used social media to garner attention. Last year he faced similar outrage for wishing for a “white genocide” for Christmas.
Ciccariello, who is white, later called the tweet a joke because “white isn’t a race.” He has also made headlines for similarly inflammatory tweets. Last year he was put under review by the university for tweeting that 4,000 white people being killed during the Haitian Revolution was a “good thing.”
Ciccariello is currently a visiting researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico but is still employed at Drexel University. Drexel has investigated the issue and has released a statement claiming the professor’s tweets fall under the category of “protected speech” and that they have no plans to fire or remove him from the faculty.
