The Department of Defense is looking to lease space in Trump Tower in New York City to carry out “official mission requirements” and house military staff in order to protect the President. Both President Trump’s home and office is located in the 68 story building located on 5th ave in Midtown Manhattan. First Lady Melania Trump and their son Barron plan to continue to live in Trump tower until the end of the school year.
“In order to meet official mission requirements, the Department of Defense is working through appropriate channels and in accordance with all applicable legal requirements in order to acquire a limited amount of leased space in Trump Tower,” Defense Department spokesman, Lt. Col. JB Brindle, told CNN. “The space is necessary for the personnel and equipment who will support the POTUS at his residence in the building.”
In order to properly protect the President of the United States, military personnel must be nearby at all times. Not only does military staff always need to be in close proximity with the nuclear football, general military support is also a necessity. The Secret Service had reportedly looked into renting space in the building as well.
Trump Tower is owned by the Trump Organization which is now run by Donald Trump’s sons.
Jared Horowitz, who works to lease out space in the building, told CNN that on average, a floor of about 13,500 to 15,000 square feet run for about $1.5 million a year.
