On Sunday, officials announced that 29-year-old Spc. Samuel Shaaheed with the 82nd Airborne Division was found dead on Thursday in a private residence in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Shaaheed was the culinary specialist assigned to Headquarters Company, 407th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. Originally from Whittier, California; Shaaheed joined the Army in August 2012 and progressed to the 82nd Airborne in March 2013.
Lt. Col. Jeremy Mushtare, deputy commander of 2nd BCT commented on the death of the honorable soldier.
“Spc. Samuel Shaaheed was a paratrooper who proudly served our Army and our nation,” he told reporters. “As a culinary specialist, he served hundreds of our paratroopers on a daily basis. We mourn his loss and express sincere gratitude to him and his family for his dedicated service to the 82nd Airborne Division and 2nd Brigade Combat Team.”
Spc. Shaaheed’s awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Parachutist Badge.
He is survived by his wife and three children. Investigations are currently underway.
